With my new Infinity Series I wanted to capture the essence of endless variations of light changes using my glass. This art features two media: the glass and the light. Each of these studies has glass strips that are fused and "slumped" in the kiln to form bursts of uplifting shapes. The joyful spirit expressed by these dynamic pieces jetting upwards is playful and animated. I love the way the light plays across each piece in an infinitely changing process as each hour passes throughout the day. The pieces are dynamic with their dazzling reflections and every-changing light.
Each piece in this series is unique, and unrepeatable, but each expresses dynamic waves of light through its undulating form.
The key to each piece is determined by the annealing process. Annealing is a procedure of heating and cooling, used in both glass and steel to produce strength and toughness. To anneal a piece you are cooling it at such a slow rate that no part of the piece is 25 degrees cooler than any other part.
In these works I spent several months of trial and error to develop the optimum annealing time and temperature needed to give me final products that are flawless as well as durable. The tricky part was that the base of each piece is dense and thick and the gold tips are delicate and separate. With time and determination I resolved how to cool the dense part without compromising the finespun area.
